What Is Umrah?

Umrah, linguistically, means “to visit.” In Islamic law, it refers to visiting the Sacred House (the Kaaba) in a state of ihram and performing sa‘y between Safa and Marwah.

The definition and ruling of Umrah: Umrah consists of entering into ihram, performing tawaf and sa‘y, and then completing the rites by either shaving the head (tahalluq) or shortening the hair (taqsir). It may be performed at any time of the year except on the Day of Arafah and the days of Eid al-Adha (five days).

The obligatory acts (farḍ) of Umrah: * Ihram. * Tawaf.  Among these, ihram is a condition, and tawaf is an essential pillar.

The obligatory duties (wājib) of Umrah: * Sa‘y (in other schools of law, it is considered a pillar of Umrah). * Shaving the head or shortening the hair
(Hanafis and Malikis consider this wājib, while Shafi‘is and Hanbalis consider it a pillar) According to the Hanafi and Maliki schools, performing Umrah once in a lifetime is an emphasized Sunnah. According to the Shafi‘i and Hanbali schools, performing Umrah is obligatory (farḍ).

The miqat places for Umrah: For those coming to Mecca from outside the miqat boundaries, the miqat points are the same as those for Hajj. For those living within the Hill area, the miqat is the Hill itself. Those residing in Mecca, whether locals or visitors, must enter ihram for Umrah from outside the Haram area.
They enter ihram by going to places such as Tan‘im, Hudaybiyyah, or Ji‘ranah.

Rasûlullâh (sallallâhu alayhi wa sallam) said:

“The reward of an accepted Hajj is but Jannah, and Umrah (lesser Hajj) to another Umrah is an expiation of the (minor) sins committed in between them.” (Sunan al-Nasâî)
